Parvo

Parvo

Your dog is susceptible to all sorts of diseases, from heartworm to canine influenza. One of the more contagious diseases is canine parvovirus, a virus that results in serious illness. While parvo can be contracted at any age, unvaccinated one-year-old puppies are the most at risk of contracting this virus. At West Boca Veterinary Center in Boca Raton, our team is dedicated to providing care for conditions like parvo.

Signs of Parvo

While your pet may not be able to verbally communicate that he or she is dealing with a viral infection, there are some signs and symptoms to look out for as a pet owner. Common signs of parvo include abdominal bloating, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and a loss of appetite. These signs can indicate serious damage to one of the animal's organs, most likely the intestines. If your pet's health issues last longer than a week, then we recommend contacting a veterinarian’s office for help.

What Causes Parvovirus?

This virus is transmitted through physical touch and contaminated common animal surfaces such as kennels, food bowls, collars, and leashes. Parvovirus ends up causing a serious infection, potentially lowering the animal's immunity system and weakening key organs in the body. The virus tends to target the small intestines, the lining that absorbs foods and fluids that are key to a pet's longevity.
