Protecting Your Pet From Heat Stroke

Living in the tropical climate of the south brings warmer temperatures and higher humidity. These two factors carry an increased risk for pets developing heat stroke. At West Boca Veterinary Center in Boca Raton, FL, we offer preventative measures and treatment for heatstroke.

Heat Stroke Symptoms in Pets

Dogs and cats don't regulate temperature the same way humans do. Some breeds don't sweat, but instead pant. If you notice any symptoms of heatstroke, move your pet to an area with significantly reduced temperatures and attempt to normalize its body temperature. Common symptoms include:

  • excessive panting or drooling
  • difficulty breathing
  • gray or bluish gums
  • lack of urine
  • excessive thirst
  • dizziness
  • muscle tremors
  • vomiting

Once moved to a cooler location and offered cool water, your pet needs immediate veterinary care if the symptoms do not subside.

Protecting Starts with Prevention

Don't put your pet outside or walk it during the hottest parts of the day. If you must travel and take your pet with you, do not leave it in the vehicle, even with the windows left open, when it's over 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures can rise quickly within the car with any amount of sun shining into it. If you bring your pet, also bring another human to monitor the pet while you are out.

Keep the temperature of your home cooler. If your home doesn't have air conditioning, provide a fan to circulate the air in the house and a cool place for your pet to lay, such as a cold kitchen floor or a one-layer bed up off the floor to promote airflow. Avoid dressing your pet in pet clothes.

If you have a breed that benefits from having its coat shaved, make sure the fur stays short during the warmer months. If your pet must remain outside, then provide more than one shaded area and make sure the leash allows your pet to move with the shade as the sun moves. Always keep plenty of fresh, cool water nearby.
