Flea & Tick Prevention: Keeping Your Pets Safe from Fleas & Ticks

Flea & Tick Prevention: Keeping Your Pets Safe from Fleas & Ticks

Due to warm weather most of the year in the Boca Raton area, pet owners must protect their pets from fleas and ticks all year round. There is so much information and products out there; it can be confusing to know what the best course of action is for your pet. We at West Boca Veterinary Center are happy to share with you some of our favorite parasite prevention tips.

As a Vet, we recommended the following products for flea and tick prevention..

A great way to prevent fleas and ticks is with preventative maintenance. We recommended a chewable medication like Nexgard that is given once a month. This is often given at the same time as a monthly heartworm prevention like Heartgard.

Topical flea and tick preventions are also used, but most of our clients prefer the chewable options.

Additional steps to take for parasite prevention.

If you have a yard, you will want to make sure to keep the grass cut short as ticks tend to like to hide in the long grass. Fleas are drawn to any damp area, so it is important not to overwater your lawn and clear any wet leaves quickly.

Ticks and fleas can be difficult to spot, so it is vital to take some time to look for them periodically. If you have a long-haired dog, you may want to invest in a tick and flea comb to help with the search. Checking for ticks is incredibly essential if you live in a wooded area.
